Benito School is a small, family centered K-8 school. Feel free to check out our monthly newsletters for upcoming special events. We love to find opportunities to host our school families and the greater community with events like: the Grandmothers Walk, the Terry Fox Walk, monthly assemblies, our Halloween Costume Parade, the Remembrance Day Service, Christmas Concert, and Spring Band Concert and BBQ. We also love to celebrate and enjoy food together at events like the K-grad and Gr.8 Farewell, and pancake breakfasts.
New this year, Benito School has been asked to run the Benito Craft Show that is scheduled for Nov.30th. Stay tuned for more info on that event. We will need some help running the kitchen that day.
Our school is the home of the Cobra’s for all our athletic events. We have an athletic group of students coming up. We participate in all the division sports like: cross-country running, soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, and track and field. We also do disc golf, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. In addition, we have the Benito Recreation Center where we typically go skating and curling a few times a winter. Fridays are always school spirit day where we sport our Cobra gear.
We have a thriving band program and are so blessed to be able to offer an extra-curricular strings program to Gr.5-8 students due to the expertise from Mr. Slepicka. There is usually one special band trip as well as a Strings trip for the students to perform, take workshops and celebrate their hard work.
We have a co-regulation room with a trained facilitator who is available to support students that may be dysregulated. Mrs. Sushelntiski is able to model a variety of strategies on how calm down, think positively, and use a growth mindset. This is our 4th year with this support.
We have supports for students that may need a little extra. We have a counsellor, Mrs. Bender, who is able to spend 1 day a week sharing mental health strategies with classrooms and meeting with students one on one (where it has been pre-arranged with parents).
Benito School also offers Better Beginnings, a birth to school age program once a week. It will start mid to late October.
The Benito Child Care Center is located in our Building so if you are looking for childcare before school, during the day or after school you can contact the Kristin Genaille at bccckids@gmail.com or 204 539 2628
New this year, we have put a book display in the hallway near the office and the themes for that will change through the year. We started with “Indigenous Education” and the next theme will be “Around the World”
Last year we revamped our school-wide discipline approach so if you are not familiar with it check out the link under parents called bottom lines. It includes a flow chart that shows how staff deal with incidents. Restitution is important in our school where we want students to be able to re-enter a classroom (after an incident) empowered. Restitution is a process where we try to help students understand their needs and choices and then come up with a way to make the situation right. We saw a decline in office referrals once this was initiated. Everyone has the right to feel safe in school and we work hard to accomplish this.
